Lead Buttons

Lead Buttons

A small pile of lead buttons tied up with green garden wire.
I can only pressume they are some kind of weights.
Why sew lead buttons to your coat?
They are covered in a series of bumps and scratches

Scatter them over the bed...forget bothering to sew them...ward off THE EVIL EYE! Funny, that reminds me of when I was a kid...used to pile dolls all over the blooming bed, thinking if someone broke in to do harm, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. That's because my room was ground level, and I must have watched too much TV! Silly girl!

Sewn on by sadistic step-mother?
For a chain mail suit?
For a heavy metal band?
For someone who works in the x-ray industry?

They are actually dress weights. Sewn into the hems of dresses and curtains to make them hang properly.Date range probably 18th-19th century.
